Baja California peninsula bracing for effects of Hurricane Norbert

TORONTO – Once again, Baja California peninsula is dealing with the effects of a tropical storm.

As of Thursday afternoon, the centre of Hurricane Norbert was located about 245 km south-southwest of the southern tip of the peninsula with maximum sustained winds of 150 km/h. Norbert is a Category 1 hurricane on the Saffir-Simpson scale.

The storm formed early Tuesday and strengthened into a hurricane Wednesday evening.

A tropical storm warning is in effect for La Paz north to Cabo San Lazaro, while tropical storm watches have been issued for areas north of Cabo San Lazaro.

Strong winds are expected to reach the warning areas by the afternoon, local time, and spread northward through to early Friday.

Rainfall of 76 mm  to 152 mm is expected in the southern part of the peninsula, with isolated amounts of more than 250 mm through to Saturday.

The National Hurricane Center is also warning of the potential of dangerous surf.

Norbert is expected to weaken by Friday.
