WINNIPEG-Fort Rouge is home to Winnipeg’s newest community centre.

The Mayfair Recreation Centre opened Wednesday at River Street and Stradbrook Avenue. The new 3,600 square-foot facility includes a community kitchen, multipurpose space, a skate-change area, basketball nets and storage for Winnipeg Harvest.

Outside the facility, the asphalt courts still need to be resurfaced and rink lighting will be added. The city’s Building Communities Initiative provided $1.5 million to the project, cost-shared by the city and province.

“One of the things that we know is services and resources work best when a community is engaged,” said Manitoba’s Children and Youth Opportunities Minister Kevin Chief at the unveiling. “As we see people get engaged, all these partners come together, run incredible programs, incredible initiatives.”
