A three-storey home in the Burnaby heights neighbourhood went up in flames Saturday afternoon.

Firefighters believe the three- alarm blaze started in the back of the home and went up all the way to the roof.

The homeowners were out at the North Shore when the fire started, and only learned about their house being up in flames from a neighbour who phoned. Everyone is safe and accounted for expect for the family cat.

The only way firefighters could contain the fire was to use a chain saw to cut into the steep roof.

“The real tricky part of a building of this nature is the steepness of the pitch of that roof.  It really precludes us from putting people on that roof,” says Deputy Fire Chief Chris Bowcock, “also a building of this nature has a whole bunch of small pieces and parts so we have to work both from the inside and outside simultaneously.”
