TORONTO — Godzilla director Gareth Edwards is about to explore a galaxy far, far away.

The British filmmaker, whose sophomore feature has made $216 million in its first week of release, will direct one of the Star Wars spinoffs.

The announcement was made Thursday on the official Star Wars website.

Lucasfilm and Disney are developing several stand-alone movies “that will offer new stories beyond the core Saga.”

Edwards will direct the first one, which is set for release on Dec. 16, 2016.

“I could not be more excited and honoured to go on this mission,” Edwards said in the statement.

J.J. Abrams’ reboot of the franchise, Star Wars: Episode VII, is currently in production in Abu Dhabi with a Dec. 18, 2015 release date.
