Updated: Fire crews battle grass fire in southeast Regina

REGINA – Regina firefighters were kept busy Wednesday afternoon, battling a large grass fire in southeast Regina.

Deputy Fire Chief Gerard Kay says the fire started just outside the east end of the Riverside Memorial Park Cemetery, and strong winds moved it very quickly towards Wascana Creek, near the Wascana Country Club golf course.

Breaking news from Canada and around the world sent to your email, as it happens.

Firefighters say fairway sprinklers at the golf course were being used to help prevent the fire from spreading.

At no point did firefighters feel there was any danger to housing in the area.

Kay says they were very lucky the two creeks were intersecting the blaze, containing to one area for the most part.

At its peak the fire spewed thick plumes of smoke that could be seen throughout the city.
