Search for missing Slocan Lake boaters now a recovery mission

The search for three young men near New Denver is now being called a recovery mission.

A 19-year-old woman is dead and three young men have been missing after a canoeing accident in Slocan Lake in the West Kootenay region this weekend.

The four were canoeing on Slocan Lake on Saturday when their boat capsized just 150 meters from shore.

Witnesses saw two people clinging to the canoe but when searchers arrived, they found 19-year-old Lily Harmer-Taylor unconscious inside.

She later died in hospital.

None of the four were wearing lifejackets.

Police divers joined the search for the men yesterday, but the lake is deeper than divers can go and the cold temperature of the water is preventing divers from going on long swims.
