REGINA – A pet owner was sent to hospital suffering from smoke inhalation after risking his life at a Regina house fire on Sunday.

At 5:18 a.m., the Regina fire department got a 911 call about a fire at 1445 Athol Street and arrived to find a man trying to save his pets.

Firefighters were able to rescue two dogs and three cats. The animals were put into the Regina Humane Society’s care.

Deputy Fire Chief Gerard Kay says the blaze appears to have started in the kitchen and spread into the attic.

An investigator will attend the scene Monday to determine the cause.

The fire is not being treated as suspicious.

Kay says damage to the building should be fairly significant.
