TORONTO – Jimmy Kimmel hopes Mayor Rob Ford gets the help he “obviously” needs, according to a tweet sent within hours of the mayor announcing he’s taking a leave of absence to deal with his substance abuse issues.

Ford has been a recurring punchline in Kimmel’s late night show and was a guest on the show. The host peppered the mayor with questions about homophobia, illegal drug use, his contentious relationship with the city’s police chief and a possible substance abuse problem.

Media strategist Chris Boutet responded to Kimmel’s tweet by adding: “Sure was fun enabling him, though!”

The mayor admitted a substance abuse problem late Wednesday evening in a written statement and said he is planning to take a leave of absence.

“It’s not easy to be vulnerable and this is one of the most difficult times in my life. I have a problem with alcohol, and the choices I have made while under the influence. I have struggled with this for some time,” Ford wrote in the statement.
