TORONTO – Mark Shand, the Duchess of Cornwall’s brother, died after he sustained a serious head injury Tuesday night.

“It is with deep sadness that we have to confirm that The Duchess of Cornwall’s brother, Mark Shand, has today passed away in New York,” read a statement from Clarence House.

“The Duchess, The Prince of Wales and all her family members are utterly devastated by this sudden and tragic loss.”

Shand reportedly slipped and hit his head on the pavement outside a New York club that he attended for a charity event. Earlier in the day, Shand had attended the Faberge Big Egg Hunt auction at Sotheby’s in New York.

The 62-year-old is the chairman of the The Elephant Family, an organization that exists to save the endangered Asian elephant.

Camilla and Charles are scheduled to go on a tour of Canada in May.
