WINNIPEG — The Red River is expected to crest in Winnipeg over the next couple of days as the spring high-water mark has already passed Emerson, Man.
The province’s latest flood forecast says ice cover continues to bring river levels two feet (60 centimetres) higher in Winnipeg than in open-water areas, and the Red River Floodway is not being activated due to the large amount of ice.
A high-water advisory has been issued for streams in eastern Manitoba, east of the Red River and south of the Winnipeg River, because of snow pack, a forecast rapid melt and potential for ice jams.
The Red River’s crest is expected south of the floodway in Winnipeg between April 22 and 23. An amphibex is on standby in south Winnipeg if ice jams become an issue. The province expects upcoming mild temperatures to speed up the melt.
