Winnipeg lists city streets due for improvements this year

WINNIPEG – The city has released a list of which streets have been recommended for improvements in 2014.

The city’s infrastructure renewal and public works committee will review Thursday the list of approximately $40-million in road work budgeted for local streets and alleys.

Once the list is approved by council, the jobs will be put up for bid. If the cost exceeds the budgeted amount, some projects will be deferred to 2015. If it comes in under budget, new projects will be identified.

The locations were selected by councillors based on the condition of the street, ward priorities, the amount of traffic, whether the street is a bus route or collector street and the condition of the of the water and sewer infrastructure below the road.

The city did not make anyone available to be interviewed Monday but said in a statement the work will start once the frost is out of the ground.

Construction can’t start fast enough for many living in the city. In a new Probe Research poll, 61 per cent of Winnipeggers asked said infrastructure is their top priority. The number is the highest percentage in the history of the poll going back 18 years.

“It’s one of those things that you sort of look at and say ‘Gee, no kidding; no wonder people are concerned about it,’ ” said Probe Research’s Curtis Brown. “But then you think of every challenge that people in the city have experienced over the last few months.”
