The Calgary Parking Authority is hoping to ease the downtown parking crunch by building three new parkades within the next three to five years.
Two large parkades with 2,100 spaces would go up at 9 Avenue and 3 Street S.E. and 9 Avenue and 8 Street S.W.
There are plans for a third, smaller parkade along 4 Avenue downtown.
Councillor Gian-Carlo Carra would also like to see a change in Calgary’s parking strategy to deal with the parking shortage.
“The reality is our downtown is growing and growing and growing,” says Carra. “We are going to need more parking downtown and we are going to need more transit downtown.”
“We are also going to need to provide other opportunities for other modes of transporation, which is what the big cycle track debate is all about.”
The cycle track could eliminate up to 260 parking stalls downtown, but Carra says the Parking Authority is adding up to 350 on-street parking stalls to compensate.

The parkade plan must still be approved by city council.
