No charges for mother whose toddler died in Glenmore Trail crash

CALGARY- No charges will be laid against a Calgary mother, who was behind the wheel when a crash killed her 18-month-old son.

In December, a pickup truck was heading eastbound on Glenmore Trail when it lost control, drove across the snow-covered median and crashed head-on into an oncoming semi.

The mother and her two young sons were all rushed to hospital, but little Travis Bertrand did not survive.

His brother, three-year-old Zachary, suffered serious injuries including a broken neck and pelvis.

“[Doctors are] hoping for a full recovery, but they’re saying the best he’ll do right now is about 90 per cent,” says father Chris Bertrand. “He had his halo apparatus removed yesterday, and he’s slowly starting to get his muscles back, so we’re slowly working with him.”

At the time of the crash, police said excessive speed for the road conditions were to blame. However, they have decided not to lay charges against the mother, much to the relief of the family.

Bertrand says the development will help them move forward and focus on Zachary’s recovery.
