Medication lists could save your life

LETHBRIDGE- Alberta Health Services is working on informing Albertans who take any kind of prescription or over the counter drugs to make themselves a medication list.

A medication list is a paper that contains information about what types of medications someone takes and all the information regarding that drug.

This means the name of the pill, the dosage, why it is taken, when it is taken as well as any other allergies or drugs that can affect someone’s health.

It’s important to have this information down in case of an emergency or if you have forgotten vital information about what you take.  If a doctor or emergency worker does not know, they could administer another medication or a double dose of something that is already in someone’s body, causing a reaction or overdose.

AHS says that Albertans need to take it upon themselves to be informed and prepared for the worst.

The latest health and medical news emailed to you every Sunday.

Some things that should be on the list that Albertans may not think of include: vitamins, herbals, herbal teas as some of those have interactions with medications, as well as ointments, eye drops, patches and inhalers.

These lists can be especially important to seniors who live alone and don’t have anyone there to explain what medications they are on or young children who may be away from a parent at the time of an emergency.

They also recommend that Albertans have one list with all medical information on their fridge where EMS are trained to look as well as a smaller one on themselves at all times.
