Maritimes hit with more messy weather

ABOVE: Some residents of the Maritimes were given a cruel April Fool’s Day joke by Mother Nature Tuesday, as a strong winter storm dumped even more snow and sleet

FREDERICTON – More winter weather is crossing the Maritimes, as freezing rain, snow and ice pellets hit for the second time in a week.

Northern New Brunswick was under a blizzard warning for most of Sunday, while southern parts of the province, Nova Scotia and Prince Edward Island were all under freezing rainfall warnings.

The messy mix of precipitation is supposed to continue into Monday.

“I think it’s time that summer should start to make an appearance. Spring anyway,” said Fredericton resident Bill Young.

In southern parts of New Brunswick, residents are urged to watch for flooding. With a forecast of rain and freezing rain in those regions, ice buildup could lead to localized flooding.

“The forecasted precipitation, combined with above-zero temperatures, is favourable to promote the deterioration of ice covers particularly in streams, tributaries and small rivers in the central and southern part of the province,” EMO said in a release.

“This could lead to the break-up and movement of ice covers and, in turn, could cause jams and associated flooding along streams and rivers.”

Maritimers are being urged to stay off the roads. The mix of precipitation have made roads slippery.

“It’s depressing, more than it is frustrating, because you start to see a little bit of grass and some pavement and then it’s all white again and I’m at the point where it’s just grin and bear it,” said Rachel Whitlock of Fredericton.
