The RCMP officer in charge of B.C.’s bomb disposal squad is in North Vancouver court this week to face charges of dangerous and impaired driving.
Staff Sgt. Victor Joseph Cunha was arrested in November 2012 while off-duty, after his SUV lost control and landed in a ditch on Highway 1 near the Caulfeild exit.
He wasn’t charged until May 2013. He has been placed on administrative leave by the RCMP.
Brendan Grills, a Simon Fraser University student, says he saw Cunha driving erratically and in excess of 110 kilometres an hour before hitting a median, which caused his vehicle to land in the ditch.
In testimony Monday, Grills said he pulled over and tried to help Cunha after he crashed.
However, Grills says Cunha rebuffed the request and tried to drive the SUV, saying “I’m not drunk, my wife just left me.”
The trial is continuing today. It is unclear whether Cunha will stand in his defense.
