TORONTO – Ontario’s distracted driving fine of $155 jumps to $280 starting today.

The new amount is comprised of an increased base fine of $225, plus a $50 victim fine surcharge and $5 for court costs.

Meanwhile, the province has introduced new legislation that would impose three demerit points in addition to increasing the maximum fine for distracted driving to $1,000.

Drivers who get demerit points can face higher insurance premiums.
