Police presence requested at TDSB board meetings

Watch: Police presence requested at TDSB board meetings. Angie Seth reports.

TORONTO – The Toronto District School Board has requested a police presence at all upcoming board meetings following an incident with a trustee last week.

A letter written by chair Chris Bolton and sent to trustees last Friday says the request was made in response to “threatening” behavior by a board member.

Breaking news from Canada and around the world sent to your email, as it happens.

Meetings have at times been rowdy in the past but reached a boiling point last week when trustee Howard Goodman confronted Director of Education Donna Quan over unpaid fees to the Ontario Public School Boards’ Association.

It is expected that an off-duty police officer will be present at tonight’s board meeting and perhaps future meetings as well.

Meanwhile, the board is also scheduled to discuss a motion to write a letter to the mayor and city council asking them to clarify whether the public nudity law of Canada will be upheld at Pride events this year.

The motion was introduced by trustee Sam Sotiropoulos and supported by fellow trustees Irene Atkinson and John Hastings.
