Download the latest Apple update to avoid the ‘man in the middle’ security breach

If you own an iPhone or another Apple device you may need a software update.

Apple has fixed a major security flaw that exposed users’ personal information to hackers. It was discovered last Friday, when Apple released a software update for iOS devices. Another fix for computers running OS X was released on Tuesday.

Known as the ‘man in the middle’ breach, anyone’s communications from an iPhone, iPad or Mac could be intercepted, even when you think you’re accessing a secure site.

Graham Williams from Get Connected Media said the breach works by the hacker putting themselves in the middle of your device and the site you are trying to access.

Breaking news from Canada and around the world sent to your email, as it happens.

“By intercepting your information, they can steal your login, they can steal your password, and then they’ll go and log in to what you were trying to log in to,” said Williams.

What you can do to protect yourself:

Users will want to download iOS 7.0.6 on their device. Downloading it and installing it will fix the bug.

You can check for software updates under: Settings – General – Software Update.

But to stay protected on any device, experts recommend three things:

– Use your data plan rather than Wi-Fi
– Avoid online banking or shopping in public
– Pick a different password for every website.

Vancouver Police say they deal with cases of online identity theft every week, and recommend if you’re going online, be cautious about where you sign-in.

“Do it somewhere secure, obviously your home is the most secure place,” said Const. Brian Montague.
