New traffic record set at Saskatoon airport

File / Global News

SASKATOON – It was a record year for John G. Diefenbaker International Airport in Saskatoon.

Last year, over 1.38 million passengers went through the gates at the airport, an increase of 4.7 per cent from 2012 and up 82.6 per cent from a decade ago.

Part of that increase is due to sun destinations, which was up 4.1 per cent for the year.

The busiest month for travel was January at 124,400 followed by December. That trend shows no sign of slowing down as 134,600 travellers passed through the airport last month.

Also adding to the increase was the launch of WestJet’s Encore service.

“We are pleased to see WestJet return to this market,” said Stephen Maybury, CEO and president of the Saskatoon Airport Authority.

WestJet added twice daily direct flights to Winnipeg last week and recently announced its direct service to Las Vegas will be expanded to run year-round.

Parking has been impacted by an increase in the number of travellers, with the parking lot currently at capacity. Officials have prepared overflow parking to meet demands.
