Police charge Calgary teacher with sexual assault

CALGARY – A teacher with the Calgary Catholic School District is facing a number of serious charges related to the alleged sexual assault of a 16-year-old boy.

The 30-year-old woman is accused of carrying on a sexual relationship with the boy, who is a former student at the school where she teaches.

Police say a member of the public alerted officers after he spotted what he believed to be ‘suspicious activity’ in a vehicle in northwest Calgary.

“Under the Criminal Code of Canada, a minor cannot legally consent to a sexual relationship with a person who is in a position of trust,” explains Calgary police S/Sgt. Kelly Campbell.

Jennifer Mason is charged with sexual assault, invitation to sexual touching, sexual exploitation and sexual interference.

To protect the identity of the victim, details about the school have not been released, but police say parents have been notified.

“Immediately upon finding out than an investigation was underway, the teacher was put on unassigned duties and removed from the school” says Calgary Catholic school spokeswoman Tania Younker.

She was later suspended from the school she taught at.

“The safety of our students is our top priority.” adds Younker. “We’re shocked, saddened and disappointed to hear this news. And our thoughts and prayers are with the families involved.”

Investigators don’t believe there are any other victims.
