Infrastructure maintenance by far top priority for Winnipeggers

WINNIPEG – The most important issue facing the city is maintaining infrastructure, according to the results of a poll done for Global News and CJOB.

When asked what they believe is the most important issue facing the City of Winnipeg, 39 per cent of respondents said maintaining infrastructure is their biggest concern. A related issue – city services, such as snow removal and transit – ranked second, with 18 per cent saying services are the most important issue.

Mismanagement at city hall is the top concern for 17 per cent of those polled, while health care was the top concern for 15 per cent. High taxes ranked fifth at 11 per cent while a former major concern, crime/policing, was only the top concern for nine per cent of those surveyed.

Poverty and homelessness are the top concern of eight per cent of respondents, and the same percentage of people are most concerned about city planning (design, traffic, etc.).

Lack of transparency/accountability and the economy are top concerns for five per cent of those polled, general dissatisfaction with city hall is the main worry of four per cent, while the education system and the environment were identified as concerns of two per cent of respondents.

The rest of those polled indicated other concerns (seven per cent) or said they didn’t know or had no comment (six per cent).

The Insightrix Research poll surveyed the opinions of 600 Winnipeggers and had a 4.35 per cent margin of error, 19 times out of 20.
