Video: Canada Post testing ‘Bait Mail’ program

You’ve heard of bait cars and bait bikes, but did you know there’s bait mail?

Canada Post setting up the program to deal with theft and vandalism and they’re thinking of expanding its use where community mailboxes have become a prime target.

In 2010, various Lower Mainland RCMP detachments and police agencies, in conjunction with Canada Post, ran a bait mail operation that delivered 39 arrests and more than 300 charges.

Canada Post is not revealing how the bait mail program works, but it’s been implemented in the system for the past six months.

Officials are also hoping new super mail boxes will stop thieves in their tracks, but not everyone is convinced.

Canada Post says they’ve already had several arrests in the past few weeks from these latest strategies.

The corporation says vandalism and theft from community mailboxes is a fraction of a percentage point, with half of those incidents happening in the Lower Mainland.
