Father of four continues to fight for his life after hit and run

LETHBRIDGE- “It was a huge weight lifted off my shoulders, I was just praying that one of these days good news would come, not just bad, and it came,” says 16-year-old Kyrsten Miller, the daughter of hit-and-run victim Lorne Miller.

His daughters are grateful to hear the Lethbridge Regional Police have laid charges in the collision involving their father.

“A gentleman turned himself in yesterday, around 2 o’clock in the afternoon to the police station,” says Sgt. Russell Lawrence.

30-year-old Edward James Mikla of Lethbridge is charged with one count of failing to stop or remain at the scene of a collision causing bodily harm.

Police have also seized a vehicle they believe is related to the hit-and-run.

“We were able to seize a vehicle that was consistent with one that was previously released on the video images to the media. It was a black pickup, a Nissan Titan,” adds Sgt. Lawrence.

With an arrest made, Miller’s family is now focusing on his recovery, praying he can pull through and one day come home.

“He’s having bleeding in his spleen right now, and they won’t do surgery, because if they do surgery they think he won’t make it at all,” says Kyrsten Miller.

The father of four has already undergone a series of surgeries and has suffered severe trauma to his head.

“They had to take out part of his frontal lobe, so they could relieve pressure in his head,” adds Miller.

With such serious injuries, doctors have told the family Lorne may never be the father they once knew.

Miller adds, “They said he won’t make a full recovery, and he won’t be the same guy as he used to be if he does survive.”

Even though LRPS have laid charges they’re still asking the public to come forward if they have any information that could help in the case.

Additional charges could be laid in this case.

30-year-old Edward James Mikla will make his next court appearance January 30th.
