Road conditions poor as Manitoba deals with extreme wind chills

WINNIPEG – The RCMP issued a warning about poor driving conditions and parts of Manitoba were under a wind chill warning on Wednesday morning.

Lakeshore School Division in the Interlake also closed schools on Wednesday.

RCMP issued a warning about icy, slippery conditions on the south Perimeter Highway shortly after 8:30 a.m. Several crashes, including a rollover on the highway, occurred in Winnipeg during the morning rush hour.

The Trans-Canada Highway from the Perimeter Highway to Highway 12 and Highway 12 from the Trans-Canada to Steinbach had near zero visibility at times, the RCMP said in an advisory issued early on Wednesday. The advisory was withdrawn at about 9:30 a.m.

The provincial road report showed poor to fair visibility on many highways south and west of Winnipeg, including the Trans-Canada Highway west of Winnipeg and Highway 59 from Winnipeg to the U.S. border.

Steinbach was one of several communities under a blowing snow warning on Wednesday morning. Morden, Winkler, Altona, Emerson, Morris, Steinbach, St. Adolphe, Dominion City, Vita, Richer, Selkirk, Gimli, Stonewall, Woodlands, Eriksdale, Portage la Prairie, Headingley, Brunkild, Carman, Dugald, Beausejour and Grand Beach all were under blowing snow warnings for most or all of the morning.

Meanwhile, wind chill warnings were in effect in much of southern Manitoba, with advisories added for Killarney, Pilot Mound, Manitou, Berens River, Little Grand Rapids, Bloodvein and Atikaki just before 10 a.m. Warnings remained in effect in Winnipeg, Selkirk, Gimli, Stonewall, Woodlands, Eriksdale, Portage la Prairie, Headingley, Brunkild, Carman, Dugald, Beausejour, Grand Beach, Morden, Winkler, Altona, Emerson, Morris, Steinbach, St. Adolphe, Dominion City, Vita, Richer, Arborg, Hecla, Fisher River, Gypsumville and Ashern, Man. Wind chills of -40 were forecast overnight and in the morning. They were expected to moderate slightly in the afternoon as winds diminish but stay in the -35 to -40 range.

Wind chill warnings are also in effect in Ontario, including Kenora, Grassy Narrows, Whitedog, Sioux Narrows, Nestor Falls and Morson.

Wind chill warnings ended after 10 a.m. in Brochet, Lynn Lake, Leaf Rapids, Pukatawagan, Thompson, Nelson House, Split Lake, Gillam, and Shamattawa, Man.

The temperature in Winnipeg at 10 a.m. was -28 C, with the wind chill making it feel like -42.
