SASKATOON – A Saskatoon mother accused of killing her son will be going for a psychiatric assessment.

Kellie Johnson, 35, is charged with first-degree murder in the death of her son, five-year-old Jonathon Vetter.

Vetter was found dead Saturday morning after police were called to an Avenue R South home for reports of an injured child.

In court on Thursday, Johnson was ordered to undergo a 30-day psychiatric assessment at the Saskatchewan Hospital in North Battleford.

“She will be seen by psychiatrists the purpose of the assessment is twofold, the first has to do with looking at her mental health issues in general and her mental health issues specific to this particular charge,” said Johnson’s lawyer Leslie Sullivan.

“Obviously in a case of this nature the first concern everybody has is with respect to the mental health of the individual charged.”

When asked about a possible not criminally responsible outcome, Sullivan said that was one of the reasons for the assessment.

“One of the reasons that she’s going to the hospital is so the psychiatrists can take a look and give us a proper report on that and other issues,” Sullivan said.

Johnson is due back in court on Feb. 6.

A memorial service for Jonathon Vetter was held on Thursday.
