Saskatoon police identify victim, accused in first murder of 2014

SASKATOON – Police have identified the first murder victim in Saskatoon for 2014.

Jonathan Vetter, 5, was found dead early Saturday morning at a home in the 400-block of Avenue R South.

Police had been called to the residence around 5:30 a.m. for an injured child.

A person of interest was identified and Kellie Johnson, 35, was arrested and charged with first-degree murder later in the day.

Johnson appeared before a justice of the peace on Saturday and is scheduled to make her first court appearance on Monday.

There are unconfirmed reports Johnson was Vetter’s mother however police have not released the relationship between the two.

Vetter’s cause of death has not been released.

Family and friends were concerned for Johnson’s well-being last year due to a history of mental illness.

She was reported missing from the Dube Centre at Royal University Hospital on Jan. 4, 2013 after she left the building two days earlier and was located on Jan. 28, 2013.
