Celebrity splits, marriages and babies of 2013

TORONTO — Celebrities fall in love, get their hearts broken and reproduce the same as everyone else — but when stuff happens to them, it tends to make headlines.

Here’s a look back at some of the romantic highs, relationship lows and celebrity baby news of 2013.

BREAK-UPS

Nothing screams “sanctity of marriage” like the Kardashian family.

Kim Kardashian’s divorce from basketball star Kris Humphries was finalized in June (they split up in 2011 after only 72 days of marriage) so, in October, Kim got engaged to rapper Kanye West — four months after they welcomed baby North West. It will be Kim’s third marriage.

Kardashian mom Kris Jenner and her husband of 22 years, former Olympian Bruce Jenner, announced their separation in October.

The year ended with Khloe Kardashian filing for divorce from basketball player Lamar Odom in December after four years of marriage and months of tabloid headlines about his alleged cheating and drug use.

Star relationships that came to an end included some relatively long ones (George Clooney and Stacy Keibler; Kellan Lutz and Sharni Vinson; Ryan Seacrest and Julianne Hough; Josh Radnor and Julia Jones; Seann William Scott and Lindsay Frimodt; Regina King and Malcolm Jamal-Warner; Britney Spears and Jason Trawick; Michelle Williams and Jason Segel; Jane Lynch and Lara Embry; and Madonna and Brahim Zaibat) and some fairly short ones (Zachary Quinto and Jonathan Groff; and Henry Cavill and Kaley Cuoco).

In March, actress Anna Kendrick and director Edgar Wright ended their Canadian-spawned relationship (they met on the set of his Toronto-shot movie Scott Pilgrim vs. the World) after four years.

The game of Kat (Von D.) and deadmau5 came to an end in June when the pair called off their engagement after six months. She accused him of being unfaithful but he insisted the mau5 did not play while Kat was away.

Also calling off their engagement was singer Miley Cyrus and actor Liam Hemsworth. News of their split came in like a wrecking ball in September.

The couple had put rumours of a break-up to rest in July when Cyrus flew to Edmonton to spend time with Hemsworth, who was shooting Cut Bank in the city. The pair enjoyed a romantic weekend at the Fairmont Jasper Park Lodge.

Toronto-raised Nina Dobrev and her Vampire Diaries co-star Ian Somerhalder ended their three-year romance in May (but there have since been reports they’re trying to work things out).

Singers Katy Perry and John Mayer reportedly broke up in March after seven months of bliss — and then figured out a way to make it work.

Also said to be working on their relationship are actress Ashley Judd and race car driver Dario Franchitti, who announced in January they were separating after 11 years of marriage.

In August, Michael Douglas and Catherine Zeta-Jones said they were taking a break.

A pair of Hollywood couples who separated in 2012 had their divorces finalized in 2013. Courteney Cox and David Arquette were officially done in May and Peter Facinelli and Jennie Garth finalized their divorce in June.

Diane Lane filed for divorce from Josh Brolin in February after eight years of marriage. Their divorce was finalized in early December.

Actress Jane Seymour and her husband of two decades James Keach filed for legal separation in October. Crocodile Dundee star Paul Hogan and his wife Linda separated in September after 23 years.

In October, Dina Eastwood filed for divorce from Clint Eastwood after 17 years of marriage. Earlier in the year she said they had been living apart for quite some time.

In July, after a decade together, celebrity chef Nigella Lawson and art dealer Charles Saatchi ended their marriage following a very public throat-grabbing.

Also calling it quits in 2013 were: Actors Mamie Gummer and Ben Walker; Keri Russell and Shane Deary; model Miranda Kerr and actor Orlando Bloom; and country singer Jason Aldean and Jessica Ussery.

Model Liberty Ross filed for divorce from director Rupert Sanders in January after a decade of marriage when photos surfaced showing Sanders passionately kissing actress Kristen Stewart.

On Dec. 10, show business couple Idina Menzel and Taye Diggs announced they had separated after 10 years of marriage.

Canadian celebs had their share of heartbreak, too.

In January, pop star Justin Bieber confirmed his on-again off-again relationship with singer-actress Selena Gomez was done for good.

Actors Jay Baruchel and Alison Pill, who were engaged in 2010, split up in early 2013. Baruchel tweeted that he was “heartbroken” about being dumped.

Rachel McAdams and her British boyfriend, actor Michael Sheen, ended their relationship in March after more than two years together.

And actress Malin Akerman split from American musician Roberto Zincone in November after six years of marriage — and only months after they welcomed son Sebastian.

MARRIAGES

A few famous Canadians exchanged vows in 2013.

Singer Avril Lavigne and Nickelback’s Chad Kroeger wed on Canada Day in France.

Former 90210 star Shenae Grimes wed Josh Beech on May 10 and actor Stephen Amell tied the knot with Cassandra Jean on May 26.

As first reported here, actress Elisha Cuthbert wed NHL captain Dion Phaneuf on July 6 in Prince Edward Island. The Aug. 3rd wedding of actor Kevin Zegers and Jaime Feld was also first reported here.

Celebrity love was everywhere in 2013, of course.

It was first reported here that Tina Turner, 73, and music executive Erwin Bach, 57, tied the knot in Switzerland in June after more than 25 years together. The couple celebrated their nuptials on July 21.

Other musical marriages in 2013 included: Kelly Clarkson to Brandon Blackstock on Oct. 20; Chris Kirkpatrick of ’N SYNC to Karly Skladeny on Nov. 2; John Legend to Chrissy Teigen on Sept. 14; Diana DeGarmo and Ace Young on June 1; Goo Goo Dolls singer John Rzeznik to Melina Gallo on July 26; rapper Wiz Khalifa to Amber Rose on July 8;  and rocker Scott Weiland to Jamie Wachtel on June 22.

Panic! at the Disco frontman Brendon Urie tied the knot with Sarah Orzechowski on April 27. In September, he told Global News: “We’ve lived together for so long the only thing that’s different is saying ‘husband and wife,’ which I totally am into. I’m such a romantic so it’s totally cool.”

Later, Urie admitted both he and his wife are sexually open-minded.

“She’s attracted to girls, and I think some men are extremely attractive,” he said. “I have no shame in it. It’s fun to dabble!”

As first reported here, Indigo Girls singer Emily Saliers wed her longtime partner, Alberta-native Tristin Chipman, this past summer.

Oct. 21 was a busy day for celebrity weddings. Among those making it official were musician Pharrell Williams and Helen Lasichanh; actress Rose McGowan and Davey Detail; ex-Olympic diver Greg Louganis and Johnny Chaillot; Mad Men star Ben Feldman and Michelle Mulitz; and 30 Rock’s Keith Powell and Jill Knox on Oct. 12

Making a commitment was no laughing matter for comedian Jimmy Kimmel, who wed Molly McNearney on July 13; SNL star Seth Myers, who married Alexi Ashe on Sept. 1; and Brooklyn Nine Nine star Andy Samberg, who wed Joanna Newsom on Sept. 21.

Acting duos making it official included: Melissa Gilbert and Timothy Busfield on April 24; Halle Berry and Olivier Martinez on July 13; and Kristen Bell and Dax Shepard on Oct. 16.

Let’s start by welcoming some of the half-Canadian celebrity babies of the year.

David Furnish, a native of Toronto, welcomed his second son with partner Elton John in January.

In March, Ontario native Shauna Robertson had a baby boy with American actor Edward Norton and B.C. model Sonni Pacheco had a daughter with Jeremy Renner.

Toronto-raised Malin Akerman had a baby boy in April with husband Roberto Zincone (they later split up).

Bryan Adams, a native of Ontario, had his second child in April with Alicia Grimaldi.

As first reported here, New Brunswick-born actress Anna Silk and her husband Seth Cooperman welcomed baby son Sam in May.

B.C. crooner Michael Bublé and his wife Luisana Lopilato had their first child, son Noah, in Vancouver on Aug. 27.

Actor Vince Vaughn’s Alberta-born wife Kyla welcomed their second child, a son named Vernon, in August.

In October, Toronto-born actor Stephen Amell became a first-time dad with Cassandra Jean, who gave birth to a baby girl.

Stars of all ages became parents in  2013 — from 27-year-old actor Jamie Bell to 69-year-old director George Lucas.

Among the music stars who brought new lives into the world are Zac Hanson, Dierks Bentley, Fergie (with actor Josh Duhamel), Hillary Scott of Lady Antebellum, both Kevin Richardson and Howie Dorough of Backstreet Boys; Cheryl Wright, Jamie Cullum, Justin Guarini, Wiz Khalifa, Kara DioGuardi, Shakira and Lily Allen.
