680 CJOB feels honoured to support the 1st Annual JH Bruns Alumni Charity Challenge Golf Tournament in support of Project 11.

2015/2016 was a very challenging year for JH Bruns Alumni.  In a 1 year time span mental illness took the lives of 3 of our alumni, one of them being a very good childhood friend of ours; Christy Hall (O’Dowda) – class of 1990.  Christy lived life to the fullest.  Always smiling.  Always the life of the party.  Had a laugh like no other.  She was also one of the strongest people you would ever meet.  Sadly, her illness was stronger than her.

More often than not, those that suffer from mental illness, suffer alone and it shouldn’t be this way.   Sadly we’ve grown up in an era where talking and keeping the lines of communication open never happened.  It’s time to change the stigma around mental health (not just mental illness); start opening up the lines of communication and what a better way to do this, than with our youth.

Many have seen the video called “Believe in Ryp”.   Project 11 is based on Ryp’s story… keeping Rick Rypien’s (former member of the Winnipeg Jets) memory alive while educating our youth (students in Grades 5-8) on mental health and how to deal with mental illness and recognizing the signs.

On July 7th, 2017 the 1st Annual JH Bruns Alumni Charity Challenge Golf Tournament will take place at Kingswood Golf & Country Club in La Salle.  All proceeds for this year’s tournament will be donated in Christy Hall’s (O’Dowda) name to Project 11.
