Several communities in British Columbia’s Shuswap region are under threat from a sprawling wildfire that has already destroyed multiple homes. Residents in B.C.’s Interior are doing what they can to help each other, but the fire is shutting down some well-intended aid. While emergency crews in B.C. are making progress fighting the wildfire threatening Kelowna, officials are beginning to assess the damage in West Kelowna. We get a closer look at the severity of the structural losses, and speak with one evacuee who lost her home in the fire. When Yellowknife residents were ordered to leave the city over a nearby wildfire, many evacuees took refuge in Behchokǫ̀, the nearest town by road to the capital of the Northwest Territories. But the scramble to safety has seperated families, leaving evacuees anxious and angry. Prime Minister Justin Trudeau is in Prince Edward Island for a retreat with his revamped cabinet, as the federal Liberals face criticism for rising affordability and housing costs. The pressure on Trudeau to revamp the government’s economic policies, and the continued pressure the Conservatives and leader Pierre Poilievre are putting on the polls. Cleanup is underway in southern California after tropical storm Hilary soaked several cities, being the first such weather system to hit the state in over eight decades. California’s deluge, the earthquake which shook Los Angeles soon afterwards, and the unexpected upside of the record-breaking rainfall. Plus, a cargo ship is making headlines not for what it’s carrying, but how it’s powered. The boat has been retrofitted with massive sails, intended to lower the emissions and costs of such voyages.
