The small island nation of Taiwan is a technological giant. It produces 60 per cent of semiconductor chips worldwide and almost 90 per cent of the world’s advanced semiconductor chips. Some experts believe that Taiwan’s powerful semiconductor industry – what some refer to as its “silicon shield” – could protect it from invasion by China. Jeff Semple explains.
