NDP MP Rachel Blaney pressed Intergovernmental Affairs Minister Dominic LeBlanc on Thursday, during a meeting of the Standing Committee on Procedure and House Affairs, on why there is a delay in holding a public inquiry into allegations of foreign election interference. She asked why, if the government has said it will hold an inquiry if recommended by the special rapporteur, one couldn’t be held now. In response, LeBlanc said the government has taken “incremental” steps every election to help Canadians have trust in their democratic institutions, and the rapporteur is another step. However, he did not specify why the government has decided against immediately launching a public inquiry.
