Special counsel to oversee DOJ investigations into former president Trump: Garland

U.S. Attorney General Merrick Garland announced on Friday the appointment of former DOJ Public Integrity Section Chief Jack Smith as special counsel to oversee two investigations into former president Donald Trump. The first case will investigate whether any person or entity unlawfully interfered with the transfer of power following the 2020 presidential election or the certification of the electoral college vote. The second involves classified documentation or presidential records, as well as the possible obstruction of that investigation.
