World leaders gathered in Egypt on Monday for the beginning of the COP27 United Nations (UN) climate conference. Talks on reparations for poorer states disproportionately affected by climate change are set to feature prominently in the conference. UN Secretary General António Guterres told the gathered leaders they face a stark choice to work together now to cut emissions or condemn future generations to climate catastrophe as the world is on a “highway to climate hell.”
