Pope Francis wraps Canadian reconciliation visit by apologizing in Inuktituk: ‘Mamianaq’
Description
July 29, 2022
Pope Francis apologized once again for the evil perpetrated by “not a few” Catholics as he wrapped up his six-day visit to Canada in Iqaluit on Friday. “Mamianaq,” he said as cheers rumbled through the crowd of a few hundred people. The word means “sorry” in Inuktituk, one of several Indigenous languages barred from use in residential schools, which 150,000 Indigenous children were forced to attend.
