For many in the local Polish community, this holiday season marks the 40th anniversary of martial law being declared in their homeland. When the Communist government began restricting civil liberties, it had a ripple effect in our province as British Columbians rallied around dozens of Polish fishers and crew after they walked off their ships – seeking asylum in Canada.
