The Omicron COVID-19 variant was detected in the Netherlands before two flights arrived from South Africa last week carrying the variant of concern, Dutch officials said on Tuesday. Two test samples taken Nov. 19 and Nov. 23 tested positive for the variant, and only one of the individuals had visited southern Africa. The news raises questions on when and where it first was detected despite South Africa being the first to identify it.
