The rise in anti-Asian racism has been seen across Canada and North America, but Metro Vancouver has been hit particularly hard. The 717 per cent increase in incidents since the pandemic began has created fear in Vancouver’s East Asian community, to the point where some people don’t even want to go out in public anymore. As Sophie Lui reports, COVID-19 has only exacerbated an undercurrent of racism that some say has always existed.
