Protecting wetlands in Peterborough and around the world
World Wetlands Day is recognized Feb. 2 in countries around the world.
According to the Ramsar Convention, the only international wetlands-focused treaty, between 1970-2015 wetlands around the globe disappeared at a rate of three times that of forests.
The causes were identified as climate change and other “global megatrends”, such as population increase and urbanization.
In Peterborough, the call is out to protect wetlands and educate the public to their crucial connection to access to clean water, developing biodiversity and helping to counteract climate change.
We hear from Peterborough GreenUP, an organization that shares access to several resources for wetland recognition and conservation.
