The first of thousands of residents and vacationers who were stranded on a beach in southeastern Australia landed near Melbourne on Saturday after a 20-hour journey by ship. The passengers were rescued by a naval ship in Mallacoota, where 4000 people fled to the waterfront on New Year’s Eve to escape the wildfires.
