How to skip the registry and renew your vehicle online
Description
August 18, 2014
CALGARY- It’s no secret that people tend to put off that annual trip to the registry, but a little-known program means drivers can now renew their vehicles from the comfort of home.
An electronic renewal option is now offered by the province, which only requires a registration number, insurance policy and a credit card.
“Probably the biggest thing is it's convenient for people,” says Ron Wilson from the Alberta Motor Association. “You don't have to come into a centre, you don't have to come in at the end of the month when it gets quite busy, so you can it in the luxury of your own home with your computer.”
[polldaddy poll=8253503]
To sign up for the electronic renewal, drivers are asked to sign up for an e-mail or text reminder.
“Generally it would help reduce the environmental footprint of having to mail out all those letters, and also just for the convenience of it,” says Jessica Johnson from Service Alberta. “If you sign up for the text or e-mail reminder, they'll send you out a little note four to six weeks before your registration is due to expire.”
The cost of renewing online is the same as in person at a registry.
