New Year’s Eve celebrations turned deadly at an upscale ski resort east of Geneva, Switzerland. A massive fire broke out in a crowded bar, killing at least 40 people and injuring at least 115, many with serious burns. Police in Barrie, Ont. are investigating the death of a 10-year-old boy. Officers went to a home to perform a wellness check, where they found the boy’s body. Canada’s new Grocery Code of Conduct officially takes effect Thursday. The country’s largest retailers signed on to the deal, which aims to create a fairer supply chain and help smaller stores compete. Plus, nationally-celebrated artist J.D. Hawk will hang up his paintbrush for good. Known for his vivid depictions of Métis culture, Hawk is retiring after a long and colourful career.
