Nine people were killed and 10 wounded when gunmen opened fire at a tavern in Johannesburg’s Bekkersdal township early Sunday, police said. Authorities say about a dozen suspects arrived in a white minibus and a silver sedan and shot patrons at random before fleeing the scene. “It was a chaotic scene and heartbreaking what happened there,” eyewitness Nokuthula Bhukwana said, adding that residents used wheelbarrows to carry the injured to a nearby clinic. Police say the motive for the shooting remains unknown and have appealed to the public for information as a manhunt continues.
