The largest capital project in Pickering's history will move ahead, despite city council hitting pause on plans earlier this year amid economic uncertainty. Located in central Pickering, the new Seaton Recreation Complex and LIbrary will include a twin pad arena, aquatics centre, gym, outdoors spaces, and other amenities. In May, council deferred a final decision on the more than $266 million project, partially in response to tariff threats from the U.S. On Monday, council rejected options to scale down the plans or delay the project further. While development charges will fund most of the library cost, the rest of the project will require debt financing. City staff will look for grants, but they estimate the project will result in a future tax levy increase of 11.7%.
