Anisininew Okimawin Grand Chief Alex McDougall spoke Friday about a “cycle of failure” from the federal government when it comes to wildfire strategy in the province of Manitoba. “From 2009 to 2022, there have been more than 1,300 emergencies in First Nations communities forcing over 580 evacuations… Ottawa allocates roughly 78 per cent of wildfire funding to response and only 22 per cent to preparedness. That is not by oversight, that is by choice and design.”
