‘After the Bell’ initiative helps Durham students, families access food assistance during summer
Description
July 24, 2025
At the end of every school year, thousands of families across the Durham District School Board that use essential school meal programs are left struggling to access food. So, this summer, the Ignite Durham Learning Foundation has launched an "After the Bell" food initiative. It's been running for 4 weeks and has already delivered around $32,000 worth of food and $11,000 in grocery gift cards. Staff put together hampers that also include other useful items like toiletries and clothing. Donations come from Feed the Need in Durham, as well as other local donors. Families in need are identified by school staff and hampers are delivered across Durham Region weekly.
