Trump threatens 35% tariffs on Canada, jeopardizes trade talks
Description
July 11, 2025
U.S. President Donald Trump has introduced a new challenge to trade talks with Canada, threatening 35 per cent tariffs on Canadian imports starting Aug. 1. The White House has since clarified that these tariffs would only apply to goods not covered by the Canada-United States-Mexico Agreement (CUSMA), the current free trade agreement, which are already subject to 25 per cent tariffs. This new threat comes just days before Canadian officials had hoped to secure a new trade deal. Jackson Proskow has the story.
