For the last five years, Scotian Shores has been transforming fishing and shoreline debris collected during beach clean-ups into a variety of products from jewellery and magnets into pens and soap dishes. The goal is to keep waste out of the ocean surrounding Nova Scotia. Angela Riley, founder and executive director of Scotian Shores, says the problem of coastal garbage isn’t improving, but this initiative is one step toward ensuring that such materials stay out of landfills.
