Nearly one hundred people rallied outside Peterborough-Kawartha MPP Dave Smith's office on Monday afternoon -- part of a grassroots province-wide pushback against Bill 5. Bill 5 is also known as the Protect Ontario by Unleashing our Economy Act. Protesters waved signs and lined Chemong Road, drawing steady honks of support from passing cars. The Ford government says the bill would speed up approvals for major economic developments in response to U.S. tariff threats. Opponents, including First Nations and environmental groups, warn it could bypass labour and environmental laws and limit Indigenous consultation. The province aims to pass the bill before the legislature breaks on June 5.
