The first major snowstorm of the year swept into the U.S. mid-Atlantic states Monday morning, impacting tens of millions of Americans nationwide. About five inches fell in the nation’s capital of Washington, D.C. Monday, and up to eight inches in surrounding areas of Maryland and Virginia, the U.S. National Weather Service said.
